Psychology:

Daniel Pink is a writer/thinker on motivation (his book Drive would be a good one for your book reports).  In this interview, he discusses motivation in the context of schools.

  1. Summarize some of Pink’s main points about motivation as it relates to schooling.
  2. How do his arguments relate to operate conditioning?
  3. Discuss some of his arguments that you find interesting.  To what extent do you agree with them?
  4. How do you think schools could become more motivating environments for students?  What are some of the impediments that prevent these changes from occurring?
  5. General thoughts?

Psychology:

The post provides 8 tips for studying/learning smarter from cognitive and learning psychologists.  This connects with our unit on learning, and even more with our next unit on cognition and memory.  It is also directly relevant to your own learning experiences.  Read the article and consider the following:

  1. Summarize some of the psychology’s findings on memory and learning.
  2. Did you find any of these tips to be particularly true to your experience as a learner? Which ones and why/how?
  3. After reading point 8, reflect on the “fixed mindset vs. growth mindset.”  What are your thoughts?
  4. How will reading this change the way you study and learn in AP Psychology and your other classes? (This is a serious question – choose some clear action steps that you will take as a result of this information)

Economics:

Watch the video in the first link, then read the article in the second.  Both are about autonomous (self-driving) cars.  Consider the following…

  • How does this relate to our conversation about technology and its impact on economic activity and labor markets?
  • Do you think this a positive development?
  • What questions does it raise?

Psychology:

Read the following link (you can listen to the full interview if you want) about neuroscience and teenage brain.  Consider the following…

  1. This probably confirms lots of advice you’ve already heard (“Don’t do drugs!”). What are the scientific explanations for the conventional wisdom that you already knew?
  2. Based on this information about the teenage brain, what do you think are other implications for teenagers (you) that weren’t mentioned?
  3. Does this relate to any of our other readings? What are your general reflections?
