Most currencies are issued by national governments.  Bitcoin is a new digital currency that was created in 2009 by an unknown person/group using the alias Satoshi Nakamoto.  There are many questions about its legitimacy, but it is taking off.  Explore the two sites below.  Watch the video on the first site and read the second.  Address the following:

  • How is Bitcoin different from other currencies?
  • What are the advantages to Bitcoin?
  • What are the disadvantages to Bitcoin?
  • Would you trust/use Bitcoin?

This video explains the former apartheid system in South Africa.  There is a lot of information in a short video, so you might want to watch it twice.  After watching…

  1. Summarize apartheid.
  2. How has it shaped the country of South Africa?
  3. Does this relate to other stories we’ve discussed in class.
  4. What are your thoughts?

Many states are voting on whether to legalize marijuana.  In addition to being a social issue, there are many economic implications in this debate.  Here is a great overview of the issue (pardon the edgy title).

  • What are the economic questions at stake?
  • What are the social questions at stake?
  • What are the health questions?
  • What is your opinion?
