21. Health, Obesity, and Fitness

Read the following two (short) articles, in order.  The first is a graphic rendering of average sized men from four different countries.  It is quite revealing (pun intended).  The second is an interesting observation of what may be causing the results.  Consider:

  • What lifestyle variables influence this data?
  • How does this relate to the way our “human habitats” like transportation and infrastructure are organized?

16. Suburban Poverty

Poverty is usually associated with urban areas, but poverty is growing in the suburbs.  This is of particular relevance to your “Urbanized” essays.  Some questions to consider in your response:

  1. What is the difference between suburbs and “exburbs”
  2. What are the added costs of living in the suburbs?

In a development in the Cleveland suburb of Warrensville Heights, seven of 14 homes were in foreclosure and boarded up last fall.http://knowledge.wharton.upenn.edu/article/as-poverty-grows-in-the-suburbs-businesses-and-governments-confront-new-challenges/
